Geeksters, backpackers, and technocrats: your hour has come. Scratch that—your whole weekend better be free. The first minitek festival will descend upon New York City from September 12th through the 14th to spread word of the newest innovations in electronic music, gadgetry, art, and design.
While evening festivities are scheduled at the mighty Penn Plaza Pavilion in Manhattan, minitek will build momentum at Coney Island on Saturday and Sunday during the day, spreading out under the shadow of the Wonderwheel to occupy two open-air stages. Attendees can test out the newest hybrids of music and technology, including interactive demonstrations of Owen Vallis and Jordan Hochenbaum’s music-generating Brick Table and James Pattern’s tabletop Audiopad. Audience competitions include a remix stand-off, and a t-shirt design showdown where participants compete to create gear for the official minitek merchandise.
The nighttime component of minitek will take place indoors and feature visual animation art from some of the top young artists of the world, including New York/Berlin-based Marius Watz, Daito Manabe from Tokyo, and Paul Prudence of London.
Headlining performances include remix guru Martin Buttrich, Ambivalent of Nerd Tank fame, and the Brooklyn-based Afternoon Coffee Boys, while beloved New York house DJ Francois K will wind down the festivities on the 14th with a special live set.
